Hosted by the MG car club the Silverstone national circuit is the season opener for 2018
7th April 2018
Silverstone Circuit is a motor racing circuit in England next to the Northamptonshire villages of Silverstone and Whittlebury. The circuit straddles the Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire border, with the current main circuit entry on the Buckinghamshire side. The Northamptonshire towns of Towcester (5 miles) and Brackley (7 miles) and Buckinghamshire town of Buckingham (6 miles) are close by, and the nearest large towns are Northampton and Milton Keynes. Silverstone is the current home of the British Grand Prix, which it first hosted in 1948. The 1950 British Grand Prix at Silverstone was the first race in the newly created World Championship of Drivers. The race rotated between Silverstone, Aintree and Brands Hatch from 1955 to 1986, but relocated permanently to Silverstone in 1987. The circuit also hosts the British round of the MotoGP series.
One of the shortest laps on the calendar, the 1.64 mile national circuit is demanding for the drivers through the corners as well as down the long straights. Across the start/ finish line they will be shifting through the gears, ultimately hitting 5th at about 105mph. Entering the first corner Copse, it will be change down one gear to fourth however the cars will hardly shake off any speed. Expect many to use the entire track and more with the run off area used to maintain a high speed. Maggots provides a good spot to line up an over take as the cars flick left and then brake hard for the tight right hander at Beckets. A good exit out of the corner is vital as it can set you up nicely for the drag down the long Club Straight. The left hander of Brooklands will see overtakes but its easy to go in too fast and lose position to the never ending Luffield corner. Taking a lot of kerb on the exit, it is then onto Woodcote and meeting the sweeping apex to begin another lap around the famous Silverstone National circuit.
Last season we visited Silverstone National as guests of the BRSCC. Qualifying was overshadowed by a major crash for MGCC competition secretary who was guest driving in Mike Williams spare car. John hit the barriers on the entrance to Copse corner, one of the fastest corners on the track, causing an early red flag. Thankfully john was ok, however the car didnt fare so well. Lee Connell won his “best race ever” in the MG Metro Cup. He lost out to Mike Williams at the start but quickly regained the position, with 72-year-old Dick Trevett also coming through. It was Trevett who provided Connell with the biggest challenge, the pair running side by side and occasionally touching, but Trevett’s car expired on the penultimate lap, allowing points leader Williams back through to second. Williams’s main title rivals, brothers Andrew and Jack Ashton, were third and fourth.
