MG Metro cup Rounds 5 & 6

Rockingham Motor Speedway IISC Long

The BRSCC welcomed as guests to their 2-day race meeting at Rockingham Motor Speedway for Rounds 5 & 6 of the Drayton Manor park MG metro cup. A hot weekend was forecast with clear skies and no chance of rain.

Qualifying for the two races would be based on the two fastest laps for each driver. Jack Ashton in car #98 set a stunning pole time for race 1, 2 seconds faster than nearest rival Dick Trevett and a similar margin for race 2.

As the lights went out Jack Ashton sped into the lead which he would not relinquish to the flag but with Dick Trevett in close attendance and Andrew Ashton in a lonelier third place a few seconds adrift. Glodek and Eales had a close battle with Glodek coming out on top in the latter part of the race, then followed by Javes and Willars with the top ten rounded out by Howe, Garrard and Davies.

Race 2 on Sunday was again in sweltering conditions with all the drivers feeling the heat in the cars and on the grid. A slightly depleted grid started without Jon Moore, Tom Burles and Tim Shooter. With all cars away cleanly again disaster for Jack Ashton as he pulled off on the first lap into retirement. This left a series of battles in pairs to produce some great racing. Unfortunately, Javes and Eales came together on the second lap leaving Eales with a recovery drive. Andrew Ashton lead the way with Dick Trevett trying every way possible to get through, in third and fourth it was Glodek and Javes with Willars and Howe battling over 5th and 6th. Willars managed to pass Howe but on the next lap retired with clutch troubles and with Tim Davies also retiring early on left 10 drivers to complete the race. Mark Eales was awarded driver of the race for a great recovery after his spin.

We head off for another double at the fast and flowing Donington Park on the 15th July with the MG car club.
