Anglesey Race Report

From wet, windy and downright horrible conditions on Saturday to glorious sunshine on Sunday, the final round of the Hickford Construction MG Metro Cup at Anglesey had a little bit of everything.

Our drivers headed to the Anglesey International GP circuit for the season finale, with Saturday morning greeting them with rain and a soaking wet track. Qualifying proved challenging, with conditions making the already fast and flowing circuit even more demanding.

As the day progressed, the weather improved and the first race saw the Metros take to a dry circuit. Matthew Simpson led the Metro contingent home, finishing 12th overall, while Tim Shooter, Jon Moore, Les Tyler, Richard Garrard and Phil Goodwin all enjoyed strong battles throughout the field.

Sunday brought a completely different Anglesey. Bright sunshine and a dry track provided the perfect backdrop for the final two races of the season – and there was still plenty of racing to be enjoyed.

After starting Race 2 from the back of the grid, Jack Ashton produced a fantastic drive, charging through the field to finish 11th overall and second among the Metros. Matthew Simpson finished just ahead of him, while Jon Moore, Tim Shooter, Les Tyler and Richard Garrard all brought their Metros home in another closely fought race.

The final race of the season saw Ashton go one better. Starting 15th, Jack once again fought his way forward, crossing the line 7th overall and taking the Metro Cup victory. Matthew Simpson followed in second among the Metros, with Tim Shooter, Jon Moore, Les Tyler and Andrew Butcher also making it to the chequered flag.

And with that, the 2026 season came to a close – with Jack Ashton officially crowned Hickford Construction MG Metro Cup Champion!

A huge congratulations to Jack on an outstanding season and a well-deserved championship. After a year of hard-fought racing, the title was secured and capped off with a Metro Cup victory at the final round.

A massive thank you also goes to every driver, team member, sponsor, marshal and supporter who has made the 2026 season possible. From the first green light at Oulton Park to the final chequered flag at Anglesey, it has been another fantastic year of MG Metro racing.
